They found Robbie opening a fresh beer in the kitchen. Jess ran through to the living room to turn down the stereo a few notches so they could hold a conversation without shouting, and she was about to launch into a fuller explanation of their relationship when he beat her to it.

“So, what is this thing with you and my sister?”

“Are you about to give me the talk?”

Jess was more amused than worried. If they couldn’t even tell him, there was no chance with David or Rachel. Robbie had no reason to complain or object and might even prove a useful ally.

“Why, reckon it’s more than a bit of fun? As hard as it is to believe you could have fun with her.”

Jess took Melissa’s hand, surprised she didn’t have a retort for that jibe. “It’s more than a bit of fun.”

“Then we’re having the talk.” He wrapped an arm across Jess’s shoulder. “I don’t care who you are. If you hurt her, you’ll have me to answer to.” Then he walked around to the other side and stooped to peer at Melissa. “Same goes for you.”

“We’ll both bear that in mind.”

Melissa rolled her eyes and excused herself to the toilet, while Jess pulled a beer from a bucket on the side. She hadn’t intended to drink but might need alcohol for this conversation.

Robbie leant against the Aga to steady himself. “Are you telling Mum and Dad?”

“Yeah, but that’s because she caught you two having sex on her new sofa.”

“True. Don’t make the same mistake.”

There was no chance of that. Anywhere in their house was off limits for now. Unplanned kissing in the bedroom aside, there was no way they were doing anything like that until Rachel and Paul knew about their relationship.

“I have no intention. You know what she’s like with Melissa.”

“I do, but if they want her with anyone, I bet it’d be you.”

“How do you figure that? You don’t think Rachel’s been planning a wedding like yours, to a man, for the past twenty-three years?”

If she’d thought David’s barbecue packed, Robbie’s wedding would be on another level. They must have invited every distant family member and close friend on both sides, and there were even more for the reception.

“Nah, she wouldn’t care whether Melissa married a man or a woman I don’t reckon. So long as she’s happy.”

“Yeah, right,” Jess scoffed. “Like she only wants her to find a job she enjoys? And only wanted her to go to a school that didn’t give her crippling panic attacks? I love your mum, but where Melissa’s concerned, she has very set expectations.”

“I guess,” Robbie mused, peeling back the label on his bottle. “It’s not only her, though. Sam’s always said Mum doesn’t think she’s good enough for me.”

She didn’t. That was no secret.

“Point proven. You realise Melissa thinks you’ve
